10/20/22

Today was a very full day as I had to get school early and we also had a Mexican celebration and then I had my internship. We first started out by helping out with some work for night market: we needed to make the signs for all the different sections and events at the market. So first we drew the block letters out and then went over everything in black marker. Making sure all the letters were straight and aligned with each other was hard because you have to step back every once in a while to see it all together, but I think we did a pretty good job even though we only did one. After we changed and were about to do another merchandise modeling session, our managers took us into one of the rooms where they are going to install their train to Asia project. The installation was blocked out and they weren't sure yet if they should completely remove one of the walls to make the room feel bigger or only take half of it down. Eventually, through some group conversation and looking at our o...

10/6/22

Today we worked on an amalgamation of tasks. Getting to the internship in itself was a little bit stressful because we had just come back from a field trip in TOK so I needed to leave fast. So, once I got to the internship, we started right away with a little briefing of what our tasks were going to look like for the day. Our first task was a simple storage task where we needed to wrap a flowery arch in bubble wrap so it can be reused. With the three of us it went by very fast and we were able to start on the next task soon thereafter. Our next task was quite a menial one, but a necessary one. There is an event that the Asia Society is hosting and they printed flyers for it, but the flyers needed to be folded, and an insert containing information about the speakers needed to be put in the folded flyer. That took a while but we still had ample time to work on our next tasks, which were more within our department. There were three things that we were asked to do: update a content matrix,...

Helping in the Gallery and Modeling

Today was a very interactive day and we got to work with departments outside of our own which was nice. It was also my first time driving to my internship which was a nice experience and gives me a lot of freedom. Anyway, the first thing on the agenda was to help with Rebecca in exhibitions again, the display cases had been cleaned and put up, and most of the rest of the exhibit was completed, but the reading area at the end of the main hallway was empty. First we had to measure the dimensions of the bookshelves and then we needed to go down to storage and get some Mylar plastic, which is a special type of plastic used as a clear and protective barrier between books, art, or other delicate and the surface they are placed on. after we successfully cut the plastic in the right dimensions and lined it up on the bookshelves, we organized book onto them, grouping them in four different categories: Art, Adult, Teen, and Kid. Once we had finished helping with that, we were taken ...

9/22/22 - First Assignments (And Helping with Exhibitions)

Today was our second day of the internship, and it was the day when we finally started on our projects. Unfortunately, our department manager, Phuong, was out, but another internship manager, Mei, was there, so we talked with them and they got us started on some projects that our manager emailed us about. The one that we chose to work on was a presentation on the teas of Asia, and we started right after our typical briefing. We learned about the history, significance, and different ceremonies surrounding tea, looking at 5 major Asian countries: China, India, Vietnam, Japan, and Korea. I focused on the history and China today, and learned some fun facts like all tea comes from one plant, it's how they process it that makes different teas. Eventually, at around 3, Mei came back and introduced us to Rebecca, who is the current exhibitions curator. She had us decide whether we wanted to paint or clean in order to help set up the new exhibit which is Yokai Japanese woodblock prints. We ...

9/8/22 - Starting Again

Today was the first day back at the internship, so we were mainly catching up and talking about new developments and changes. Now they have a gift shop and some people have moved around departments and there are new faces. It was nice to see everybody again after the summer and re-establish things like using slack, which took some time due to technical difficulties, or other things like MyImpact where we track our hours and volunteering. We talked about what we are doing in school, now that I am a junior, and our odyssey trip, as well as J and M-term stuff which they were interested about, going over things like Jeremy's Singapore M-term. The biggest thing we did, however, was the goal setting and interest form. We completed this form when we started our internship last year, but we did it again because after a year, goals and interests change so we filled out the form again. It was quite an involved form where we had to spell out what work and professional related go...
